Round-table sessions considered FinTech issues requiring immediate attention, and possible forms of collaboration for the future.

On 16 June, CenSE brought together financial services practitioners and academics from the University of Edinburgh Business School and the School of Informatics. This was done with the objective of discussing the most challenging issues on FinTech currently faced by financial organisations and how academics and practitioners might collaborate to tackle these challenges.

The event started with the talk ‘EBA’s past and ongoing work on FinTech innovations’, delivered by a representative from the European Banking Authority. Then, in a first round-table session, practitioners coming from London and Edinburgh pointed out FinTech issues that need immediate attention. In the second part of the round table, the participants discussed forms of collaborations between practitioners and academics.

The points raised during the discussions will guide the efforts of academics when defining their research agenda in the near future. Taking into account topics proposed by industry users will certainly contribute to a higher impact of the respective academic work on the financial services and on the society as a whole (for instance, regarding aspects related to consumer protection). The forms of collaborations suggested include secondments, joint multidisciplinary research projects and projects for students. CenSE will be following up with financial institutions and academics to explore all these possibilities and many others.
