The article 'Harnessing Digital Health Technologies During and After the Covid-19 Pandemic: Context Matters' appears in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. It was written in collaboration with Francesco Petracca and Rosanna Tarricone from Bocconi University, and Oriana Ciani from the University of Exeter.
The case focuses on the Italian National Health Service. Maria and her colleagues identified the institutional characteristics of strong decentralisation and autonomy in delivering health care at the regional level together with the substantial lack of digital culture in national healthcare systems. They explain that these have resulted in delays in the uptake of appropriate solutions, territorial differences, and issues engaging the appropriate healthcare professionals during the pandemic. They suggest some insights for health authorities moving forward.
